Ryan Barbaro, M.D., M.Sc., is a pediatric critical care physician, health services researcher and implementation scientist. His research seeks to improve the short- and long-term outcomes for children requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Dr. Barbaro is currently leading the NIH-funded study ASCEND (ARDS in Children and ECMO initiation strategies’ impact on Neuro-Development). ASCEND aims to characterize the one-year outcomes of ECMO-supported children and aims to address the question of if and when ECMO should be initiated in children with severe lung injury called pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome. He is a member of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Board of Directors and Co-Chair of Pedi-ECMO.
