Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship

The U-M Medical School's Department of Anesthesiology offers a one-year, non-ACGME-accredited Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology Fellowship, training one fellow annually. This fellowship aims to provide advanced training in the perioperative care of patients with congenital or acquired cardiac disease at the Congenital Heart Center of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

Training primarily takes place through participation in pediatric cardiac care three days per week in pediatric cardiac operating rooms, the pediatric catheterization laboratories, and other associated sites, including pediatric cardiac imaging studies. Fellows will serve as pediatric anesthesia faculty for two days per week, caring for patients within the general pediatric population.

Program Highlights

  • Learn alongside a faculty team for Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia that consists of 12 experienced members dedicated to clinical care, education, and research related to patients with congenital heart disease.

  • Provide care for infants, children, and adults with a variety of congenital and acquired heart diseases, including both cardiac and non-cardiac surgeries in the operating rooms, the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit, and pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratories for biopsy, diagnostic, and interventional procedures. Faculty also work in the pediatric electrophysiology laboratory and multiple other sites to provide anesthetic care for patients with congenital cardiac disease requiring a variety of invasive and non-invasive procedures

  • Train in a setting that serves a patient population with a unique complexity and acuity. During the 2023-2024 fiscal year, over 1,300 anesthetics were performed, including 423 operations with cardiopulmonary bypass, nine heart transplants, nine mechanical support device implantations, 26 hybrid procedures and more than 800 cardiac catheterizations. We serve one of the largest populations of children with single ventricle physiology in the Midwest.

How to Apply

Qualified candidates must have successfully completed one year of training in an accredited pediatric anesthesia fellowship or a one-year accredited adult cardiothoracic fellowship. Exceptional international candidates will also be considered. Two-year training positions that combine pediatric anesthesiology and advanced pediatric cardiac anesthesiology are available for interested and qualified candidates. Candidates should be board-certified diplomates of the American Board of Anesthesiology or board-eligible.

All applications should include the following:

  • Three letters of recommendation (LORs), including one from the current or previous program director and one from a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist

  • Curriculum vitae

Curriculum & Goals

The primary goal of the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology Fellowship is to provide advanced clinical training. Fellows will gain exposure to the unique aspects of the cardiac surgical program at the Congenital Heart Center of the University of Michigan, including heart transplants, cardiac assist device implantation, and care for patients on ECMO in addition to abundant cardiac surgeries with cardiopulmonary bypass

Upon completion of the program, fellows are expected to possess comprehensive pathophysiologic knowledge and technical skills to manage the perioperative care of infants, children, and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest management.

Fellows will also care for patients with congenital heart disease undergoing non-cardiac surgeries, as well as patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations and other procedures such as radiofrequency ablation, transesophageal echocardiography, and magnetic resonance imaging. They are expected to develop team leadership skills and supervisory proficiency expected of consultants and leaders in the field of pediatric cardiac anesthesiology.

Rotations

A minimum of nine months will be spent providing clinical care in the cardiac operating rooms and catheterization laboratory under the direct supervision of pediatric cardiac faculty. Additionally, fellows will have the opportunity to care for an increasing number of adult patients with congenital heart disease undergoing both cardiac and non-cardiac interventions.

The remaining months of the fellowship will be spent in the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (PCTU) (two 2-week rotations) and elective rotations in imaging, heart transplant/heart failure, and perfusion services. Depending on individual interests, additional elective time for clinical research can be arranged.

Educational Opportunities & Requirements

  • Dedicated weekly advanced pediatric cardiac anesthesiology fellowship didactic series

  • Participation in Pediatric Anesthesiology divisional meetings, including regular quality and safety reviews, case reviews, educational and research updates, and journal clubs

  • Advanced fellows will deliver two 30-minute lectures on “New Developments in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology” to the pediatric cardiac anesthesia faculty. Fellows are encouraged to present clinical case reports, PBLDs, or workshops at national meetings

  • Attendance at Congenital Heart Center-wide conferences, including PCTU multidisciplinary performance rounds, in-depth reviews, and weekly presurgical case reviews, as well as Cardiology Pathology Conferences

Benefits

The fellow will be appointed as a clinical lecturer/advanced pediatric cardiac anesthesiology non-ACGME fellow. The annual salary will consist of 40% new faculty salary and an equivalent 60% fellow salary, alongside an additional annual allowance of $3,000 for education and work-related travel.

The department will cover renewal fees for Michigan medical and controlled substance licenses, as well as dues to the American Society of Anesthesiology, Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, and Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Society. Fellows will receive 22 vacation days and 8 days for educational leave.
