Dr. Sussman is a Research Scientist in the Center for Clinical Management Research at the Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Health System and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. He attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, completed internal medicine residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of Michigan. His research is focused on developing and implementing strategies to make clinical decisions more personalized and effective. He has focused on how using a patient’s risk of cardiovascular disease to guide treatment decisions. This has involved research that could alter how we use blood pressure medications and aspirin, along with projects on how to predict patient’s risk of having heart attacks and strokes, and work on the science of changing clinical behavior. The next stage of this research will focus on developing implementation techniques that will make these ideas useful and practical for clinical use.

Dr. Sussman’s research focuses on improving the personal tailoring of medical decisions, particularly for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. He is especially interested in how risk prediction and decision analysis can be used with implementation science, and clinical policy to improve clinical practice and patient-centered care. His work on risk prediction has examined the use of Big Data in clinical care. His work on health policy looks at quality measurement as a tool of implementation science. He has used large datasets, randomized trials, survey research, and qualitative study designs.
