Karen Wilkins, M.D., named medical director for the East Ann Arbor Ambulatory Surgery Center

She will lead a team in enhancing the overall patient experience, clinical quality, and operational success of the ambulatory center.

Karen Wilkins, M.D., has been named medical director for the East Ann Arbor (EAA) Ambulatory Surgery and Medical Procedures Center. She has been assistant medical director at EAA since 2014 and previously served as interim medical director from 2015-2016..

As medical director, Wilkins will partner closely with surgical, anesthesia, and nursing leadership to coordinate and enhance value of the surgery service line of Michigan Medicine. She will coordinate and help standardize preoperative evaluations and standards of care to ensure commonality of practice and alignment with Michigan Medicine standards and will collaborate with anesthesia and surgical colleagues to build and streamline outpatient surgery.

Wilkins is a clinical assistant professor within the Department of Anesthesiology. In addition to her previous appointment as assistant medical director, she has served as director of EAA resident education, program director of the regional and ambulatory anesthesia fellowship, and as a member of the Faculty Interview Group for the department’s residency program.

Wilkins succeeds Celia Groenhout, M.D., who has served in EAA leadership since its opening in 2007, assuming the medical director role in 2013. Groenhout will continue at EAA in a clinical capacity.
