Chang Kim is the Next BRCF Flow Cytometry Core Faculty Director

Karl Jepsen, Ph.D., associate dean for research, recently announced the appointment of Chang Kim, Ph.D., as faculty director of the Flow Cytometry Core, a unit in the Biomedical Research Core Facilities. Effective June 1, 2026, Dr. Kim joins the Flow Cytometry Core leadership team along with Director David Adams, MS. 

Dr. Kim is a professor in the Department of Pathology, the Kenneth and Judy Betz Research Professor, and a member of the Mary H. Weiser Food Allergy Center at the University of Michigan Medical School. He brings extensive experience in flow cytometry, cell sorting, assay development, and core facility leadership.

“I am excited to incorporate my experience and expertise in flow cytometry instrumentation, securing funding for instruments, and a strong track record in operational management to further strengthen the service the BRCF Flow Cytometry Core already provides to customers,” said Dr. Kim. 

Prior to joining the University of Michigan in 2017, Dr. Kim served as the founding director of the Flow Cytometry and Super-Resolution Imaging Lab at Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. In this role, he established and led a shared-use core facility supporting investigators across the institution, secured NIH and institutional funding for instrumentation, and oversaw operational and strategic development of the facility.

Dr. Kim’s research program has utilized flow cytometry technologies for nearly three decades and has contributed to approximately 140 peer-reviewed publications using cytometry-based approaches. At the University of Michigan, he has continued to advance flow cytometry capabilities through the selection, acquisition, and implementation of instrumentation supporting the Mary H. Weiser Food Allergy Center. 

His experience in instrumentation strategy, shared resource operations, and investigator support will help guide the continued growth and advancement of the Flow Cytometry Core. As faculty director, Dr. Kim will work collaboratively with Core Director David Adams and BRCF leadership to support strategic planning, technology development, instrumentation funding, and service expansion for the research community across Michigan Medicine and the broader University of Michigan research enterprise.
