About
Dr. Missmer is a population scientist who conducted the first lifecourse prospective studies of endometriosis. Her >2 decades of research first identified in utero exposures, early life body size, and dietary intake as risk factors for endometriosis, and established those with endometriosis as a high-risk group for subsequent immune and cardio- and cerebrovascular diseases. In addition to exploration of her impactful aims, she has also lead creation of some of the seminal resources for gynecologic and reproductive health discovery. Dedicated to mentoring, collaborating, and promoting rigorous methodology for women's health research, Dr. Missmer is the senior endometriosis investigator in the Nurses’ Health Study Research Group, past Director of the Growing Up Today Study, and co-founder of the Boston Center for Endometriosis, where she designed and leads the Women’s Health Study: from Adolescence to Adulthood (A2A). Most recently she established the Women's Outcomes Research and Knowledge (WORK) cohort that includes adolescent and young women residing throughout Michigan who are experiencing life-impacting pelvic pain. She leads the second phase of the International Endometriosis Genomics Consortium — discovering genes unique to specific endometriosis lesion types and symptoms, and the NICHD funded WisE (What is Endometriosis?) Study that combines patient characteristics and experience with peripheral inflammatory and protein markers, lesion transcriptomics, a to better define clinically translational subgroups predicting symptoms and treatment selection. Dr. Missmer is Current Past President of the World Endometriosis Society and Field Chief Editor for Frontiers in Reproductive Health.
