About
Dr. Andrew Urquhart is a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Michigan Health System. A true local, he grew up on a farm between Dexter and Chelsea. He attended Albion College before completing medical school at the University of Michigan. Dr. Urquhart went on to complete both his general surgery internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Michigan.
Following his residency, he completed a one-year fellowship in hip and knee reconstruction at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, California. He then entered private practice in Northwest Ohio, where he remained actively involved in resident education at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo.
Dr. Urquhart returned to the University of Michigan in January 2001 to assume leadership of the Division of Hip and Knee Reconstruction from his mentor, Dr. Larry Matthews. Since returning, he has focused his academic and clinical efforts on enhancing the reliability and reproducibility of hip and knee reconstructive procedures.
He has been widely recognized for his excellence in education, receiving numerous teaching awards for his work in training future orthopaedic surgeons. His research interests reflect this commitment, with scholarly work in areas such as computer‑assisted surgery, volume‑associated surgical outcomes, and digital planning aimed at reducing inter‑ and intra‑surgeon variability. Through these efforts, Dr. Urquhart has remained dedicated to improving surgical outcomes for patients.
Dr. Urquhart is an active member of several orthopaedic specialty societies, where he has served in leadership roles including membership chair at both state and national levels. He is also a National Orthopaedic Oral Board Examiner. Across his clinical practice, teaching, research, and service, he continues to work toward “raising the bar” for all practicing orthopaedic surgeons.
