    Research Overview

Dr. Lauring’s laboratory has worked in three main areas. First, they study the importance of mutation rate and mutational tolerance to the evolution of poliovirus and influenza virus. More recently, they have utilized next generation sequencing of patient samples to define the within-host evolution and transmission of influenza virus, poliovirus, and SARS-CoV-2. Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, his laboratory has collaborated with large teams to study the genomic epidemiology of respiratory viruses and the effectiveness of vaccines against them.
