Our program is intentionally designed so that no two shifts are the same. By rotating through these four distinct environments, our residents graduate with the clinical confidence to lead in any setting—from the most advanced academic ICU to the busiest urban trauma center.
University of Michigan – Adult ED & EC3
The Gateway to Quaternary Care
- The Facility: An 865-bed academic powerhouse and one of the nation’s premier referral centers. The Adult ED features 76 beds, 3 high-acuity resuscitation bays, and a dedicated Psychiatric ED.
- Critical Care Leadership: Home to the Emergency Critical Care Unit (EC3), a pioneering ED-based ICU where residents master early, aggressive stabilization of the most complex patients.
- Clinical Volume: 101,000+ annual visits with a 30% admission rate, offering deep exposure to rare pathology and advanced medical management.
- Specialized Assets: A nationally recognized Level I Trauma and Burn Center and the high-volume Survival Flight aeromedical program.
C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital
Premier Pediatric Emergency Medicine
- The Facility: Located within the top-ranked Mott Children's Hospital, our 32-bed dedicated Pediatric ED is designed specifically for the unique needs of children and their families.
- The Experience: As a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, residents manage everything from common childhood illnesses to high-velocity trauma and complex congenital conditions.
- Multidisciplinary Care: Residents work alongside world-class pediatric subspecialists, gaining confidence in pediatric resuscitation and procedural sedation in a supportive, child-centered environment.

Excellence in Community & Subspecialty Medicine
- The Facility: A 537-bed private community teaching hospital and Level I Adult Trauma Center with a modern 64-bed ED and an 18-bed observation unit.
- The Experience: Offers a "best-of-both-worlds" training environment, combining the efficiency of a high-volume private practice (85,000+ visits/year) with the rigor of a teaching institution.
- Subspecialty Depth: Renowned for clinical strengths in cardiology, orthopedics, and geriatrics, ensuring residents are well-versed in the management of high-acuity community medicine.
Hurley Medical Center (Flint) (website)
Urban Trauma & The Front Lines of Public Health
- The Facility: A 461-bed urban teaching hospital serving Flint and a broad three-county region as a Regional Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center.
- The Experience: Provides an essential "safety net" training setting. Residents are exposed to a massive volume of penetrating and blunt trauma and the unique pathology typical of an underserved inner-city population.
- The Mission: Staffed by 22 University of Michigan faculty, Hurley combines high-intensity urban EM (100,000+ annual visits) with a mission-driven approach to health equity and clinical research.
