Developmental Cell. 2025 September 24. Maternal CENP-C restores centromere symmetry in mammalian zygotes to ensure proper chromosome segregation.

From the Publication:

“Chromosome segregation errors are common in early embryos and are a significant source of aneuploidy. This study shows that mammalian gametes contribute asymmetric levels of the centromere protein CENP-A, which the embryo must actively equalize prior to the first division to ensure accurate chromosome segregation. These findings reveal a previously unrecognized centromere quality-control mechanism operating at fertilization.”
