CPOD Faculty Publication Spotlight - Khoriaty Lab

Balbin-Cuesta G, Drysdale C, Kerpet C, Yu L, Myers G, Lin Z, McGee B, Friedman A, Liu X, Singh SA, Engel JD, Buttitta L, Khoriaty R. Blood. 2026 February 26. p27Kip1 regulates γ-globin production.

From the Publication:

"Induction of p27Kip1 (encoded by CDKN1B) promotes 𝛾-globin expression by inhibiting CDK4/6 activity, independently of BCL11A and LRF. The effect of CDK6 deletion on 𝛾-globin induction is dependent on its kinase function. CDK4/6 inhibitors increase fetal hemoglobin in human primary erythroid cells and in a murine model of sickle cell disease, and may thus be useful for β-hemoglobinopathies."
