The greatest contributor to premature death among Americans is related to dietary practices. There are over half a million deaths related to diet risks every year and the leading cause of death continues to be from cardiovascular disease (stroke, heart attack, heart failure, etc.).

Our team, along with many collaborators across Michigan Medicine and the University campus, are working to understand how the policies that impact diet and nutrition impact health. We also seek to understand the impacts of nutrition and cholesterol disorders on cardiovascular health outcomes. The projects completed by Dr. Brandt and his team are designed with the goal of guiding local and federal policy to decrease the burden of diet leading to cardiovascular disease. Dr. Brandt’s lab is unique in this and his approach of engaging policymakers to make his research have a direct impact.
