The Human Movement Rehabilitation Laboratory (HMRL) studies how the brain, muscle strength, and sense of touch and body position work together to help people walk and maintain balance. The lab focuses especially on older adults, people with neuropathy, and cancer survivors.

By better understanding these connections, the HMRL hopes to improve fall-risk assessments, develop more personalized rehabilitation approaches, and discover new ways to detect diseases that affect the nerves and muscles. Current research examines how the brain supports walking in older breast cancer survivors treated with taxane chemotherapy and how brain’s ability to process sensations from the body may make individuals at risk or more resilient to  chemotherapy-related nerve damage.
