The Science Behind Movement, Balance & Fall Risk

The Human Movement Rehabilitation Laboratory (HMRL) investigates the neural, sensory, and muscular mechanisms that contribute to gait and postural control, particularly in older adults, individuals with peripheral neuropathy, and cancer survivors. The lab examines how cognitive function, strength, and somatosensory processing interact to influence mobility, balance, and fall risk.

This work aims to improve fall-risk assessment, inform targeted rehabilitation strategies, and identify novel biomarkers of neuromuscular conditions that affect walking and balance. Current research focuses on the brain’s role in walking among older breast cancer survivors treated with taxane chemotherapy, as well as the neural mechanisms underlying changes in somatosensory function associated with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.
