Hospitalist Fellowship

The U-M Medical School Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospitalist Advanced Training Program provides a concentrated 12-month experience, including:  

In-patient obstetric (antepartum/intrapartum/postpartum):

• Tertiary referral antepartum care and ultrasound
• Operative vaginal delivery and OASIS management
• Complex Cesarean section, including hysterectomy
• Management of obstetric emergencies
• Family planning

Labor and Delivery unit leadership training:

• Critical communication skills
• Team building

In-patient gynecology:  

• Rounding, management, and discharging of non-subspeciality Gyn in-patients
• Staffing of Gyn consults in the emergency department and other in-patient services
• Performance of urgent/emergent surgeries from emergency department consults
• Performance of the Gyn portion of procedures to coordinate care for other surgical services

Trainees will participate in educating residents and medical students on the floor, in the operating room, and conferences. When serving as the Gyn rounder, trainees may also lead residents' weekly didactic sessions. Michigan Medicine has a wide array of training spaces, including a large simulation center to help with educational endeavors.

Trainees will participate in quality improvement (QI) and patient safety initiative training. Over the fellowship year, trainees will be expected to complete a QI project, including developing the research question, attaining IRB exemption, and completing multiple data-driven PDSA cycles. The QI project will culminate in a presentation to the department. Support is available for trainees who wish to translate their project into a publication or national presentation.
