Hospitalist Fellowship

The goal of the Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospitalist Fellowship is to provide the necessary experience and mentorship to help trainees become leaders in inpatient OBGYN Medicine, quality, safety, and trainee education.

Program Overview

The Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospitalist Fellowship is a one-year program for OBGYN physicians who have completed residency and who desire to acquire additional knowledge and skills, so that they may serve as:

  • Experts with advanced skills to provide all phases of obstetric care
  • Resources for all providers of obstetric care
  • Extensions of Maternal-Fetal Medicine services
  • Educators for learners at all levels (students, residents, and fellows)
  • Labor and Delivery leaders to effectively advance quality improvement and patient safety for all patients
  • Gyn hospitalists for inpatient and emergent gynecologic care 

Application Information

Minimum Requirements

  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Completion of all three USMLE and/or COMLEX exams (transcripts required)

Due to Department of Labor prevailing wage regulations, we cannot consider applicants with any type of visa

We do not review CREOG exam scores in our assessment of applicants. Score reports are not required.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for an August 2027 start date will be October 7, 2026. Virtual interviews will take place on October 12 or October 13, pending faculty schedules.

Core Program Components

Clinical Experience

The U-M Medical School Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospitalist Advanced Training Program provides a concentrated 12-month experience, including:  

In-patient obstetric (antepartum/intrapartum/postpartum):

  • Tertiary referral antepartum care and ultrasound
  • Operative vaginal delivery and OASIS management
  • Complex Cesarean section, including hysterectomy
  • Management of obstetric emergencies
  • Family planning

Labor and Delivery unit leadership training:

  • Critical communication skills
  • Team building

In-patient gynecology:  

  • Rounding, management, and discharging of non-subspeciality Gyn in-patients
  • Staffing of Gyn consults in the emergency department and other in-patient services
  • Performance of urgent/emergent surgeries from emergency department consults
  • Performance of the Gyn portion of procedures to coordinate care for other surgical services
Teaching Experience

Trainees will participate in educating residents and medical students on the floor, in the operating room, and conferences. When serving as the Gyn rounder, trainees may also lead residents' weekly didactic sessions. Michigan Medicine has a wide array of training spaces, including a large simulation center to help with educational endeavors.

Core Faculty:

Quality Improvement & Patient Safety Experience

Trainees will participate in quality improvement (QI) and patient safety initiative training. Over the fellowship year, trainees will be expected to complete a QI project, including developing the research question, attaining IRB exemption, and completing multiple data-driven PDSA cycles. The QI project will culminate in a presentation to the department. Support is available for trainees who wish to translate their project into a publication or national presentation.

Fellowship Core Curriculum

The Department is home to 10+ Board-certified and non-Board-certified clinical and research fellowships in obstetrics and gynecology. To promote cross-specialty collaboration, all trainees take part in our didactic curriculum. These are ½ day educational seminars on numerous topics relevant to clinical research and academic leadership.

Topics include research design and implementation, identifying funding opportunities, manuscript timelines and preparation, how to be an effective teacher and employment opportunities. In addition, the department sponsors social events for fellows across all specialties to further encourage collaboration and to help fellows build both a professional and personal network.

Salary & Benefits

The University of Michigan offers highly competitive salaries and generous benefits to our fellows and residents. Trainee salary will be commensurate with that of a House Officer at an equivalent level of training based on the HOA contract.
