Better Sleep for Bipolar Disorder

Are you a night owl?

Are you a night owl with bipolar disorder? Does your sleep schedule interfere with your life?

The Better Sleep for Bipolar Disorder study (HUM00235778) aims to learn more about the effects of supplemental melatonin use on mood and the circadian clock in people with bipolar disorder. 

  • Adults ages 18-60 years old with bipolar disorder type I or II
  • Individuals on psychotropic medications at stable dose for past month
  • Individuals who have an evening chronotype (your body's natural preference for sleep and waking are later)
  • Individuals who feel, down, sad, or blue
  • *Females of childbearing potential must not be pregnant or breastfeeding, and must agree to use contraception throughout the study
  • Participation includes a low dose melatonin pill and 4 behavioral sleep sessions with a clinician and half will be randomized to receive a control, a placebo pill and 4 behavioral sleep placebo sessions with a clinician
  • Visiting the study team's office two times at the Rachel Upjohn Building (free and easy parking)
  • Two days of saliva collection in your home starting six and a half hours before your bedtime
  • Downloading a mobile application on your phone to complete daily surveys
  • Answering questions about your sleep, mood, and functioning
  • Four weekly 15-30 minute virtual meetings with study staff
  • Wearing a Fitbit on your wrist throughout the study

You may be paid up to $530 for completing all aspects of the study.
