The Neurotrauma & Social Impact research team unravels the mechanisms - both pathophysiological and reparative - underlying traumatic brain injury in order to deliver knowledge, procedures, and devices that empower health care providers to improve patient lives. Through rigorous bench, translational, and social impact research, we train and empower researchers at every stage—from undergraduates to faculty—across diverse backgrounds.

We view traumatic brain injury as a sequence of events that disconnects and reorganizes neural circuits thereby affecting how people think, move, sense, and feel. Our work uncovers cellular processes responsible for injury-related damage, advances new intervention strategies to promote repair, and solutions for health disparities among patients and caregivers. Our research supports recovery for Veterans, athletes, children, and survivors of partner inflicted brain injury. Guided by innovation, collaboration, and determination, our science explores persistent symptoms, such as neuroinflammation, sensory sensitivity, cognitive impairment, and mental health. From the lab to the clinic, our work—recognized by national awards—thrives on shared purpose improve lives.
