Division of Laryngology

Our division provides medical and surgical care for voice, airway, swallowing and related disorders.

Clinical Care

The U-M Division of Laryngology and Voice Disorders Program provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for disorders of the larynx and associated structures. This includes voice, swallowing and breathing problems, and encompasses both benign and malignant diseases. Care is often interdisciplinary with close collaboration between laryngologists and speech pathologists, nursing, and other medical and surgical specialists.

For occupational and professional voice users, the multidisciplinary team at our Vocal Health Center includes vocal arts faculty from the University of Michigan School of Music Theatre and Dance. Evaluation and treatment of patients with complex airway disorders includes coordination with the University of Michigan Complex Airway Intervention and Reconstruction (AIR) program which was developed by division faculty member Robert Morrison, MD.

Education

Clinical and didactic teaching of a laryngology fellow, rotating residents and medical students takes place on a daily basis with learners participating in all aspects of the Division’s comprehensive laryngology practice. Educational experiences in the clinic include exposure to a wide breadth of patients with laryngologic disorders and training in advanced diagnostic techniques including perceptual analysis of the voice, stroboscopy, bronchoscopy and transnasal esophagoscopy. Trainees have opportunities for hands on procedural experience commensurate with their level of training, ranging from flexible laryngoscopy and office-based procedures to advanced open and endoscopic laryngeal surgical procedures.

Division members are highly dedicated to medical education, frequently contributing to graduate medical education conferences and courses, and serving as educational leaders. Robbi Kupfer, MD is the director for the department’s residency program as well as the laryngology fellowship. Robert Morrison, MD, FACS directs the quality improvement and patient safety education curricula for the department, and Norman Hogikyan, MD, FACS is a Michigan Medicine faculty ethicist involved with education of ethics fellows and medical students.
