Systemic problems require system-wide solutions — strategically designed and intentionally delivered.
Welcome to the RMM-Lab, a hub where socio-technical sciences such as implementation, innovation, engineering, medical, design, and data sciences come together to make healthcare safer and better for everyone. Our team consisting of students, trainees, faculty, healthcare professionals, and patient advocates – collaborates across disciplines to conduct applied research at the intersection of healthcare practice, policy, technology, and human & organizational behavior.
Explore Our Vision
The Learning Health System (LHS) vision has inspired healthcare transformation for over a decade. Yet, practical steps to make this vision a reality remain unclear across all types of healthcare settings — whether in "resource-rich" or "resource-poor" environments — within the U.S. and around the world. At the RMM-Lab, we’re building new integrative, adaptable tools to bridge that gap; making the LHS vision achievable for all.
Our Current Big Questions
At our Learning Health Sciences lab, we are committed to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in healthcare by asking bold questions that drive innovation, learning, and transformational improvement:
- Preventing Serious Medical Errors
How might we better understand why preventable, high-risk medical errors — that (by definition) should “never” happen — continue to occur, and what critical changes can disrupt these cycles? - Creating Learning Health Systems That Continuously Improve
How might we leverage multidisciplinary approaches to develop innovative methods that help healthcare organizations not just adopt best practices, but continuously learn, adapt, and improve patient care? - Harnessing AI for Safer, Smarter Healthcare
How might we harness artificial intelligence to enhance patient safety, improve decision-making, and support sustainable change in Learning Health Systems? - Sustaining Change Through Strategic Learning Health Systems Leadership
How might we identify and cultivate the leadership and management skills needed to drive and sustain meaningful healthcare improvements in an era of AI and rapid technological change? - Enhancing Surgical Safety and Access through a Global and Domestic Approach
How might we design scalable, context-aware solutions that improve surgical safety and accessibility in both high-resource and low-resource settings, ultimately benefiting U.S. patients regardless of their location?
