Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography Fellowship

The Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography (AEMUS) Fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical School Department of Emergency Medicine has been shaping dedicated clinicians into confident ultrasound educators and leaders—both at the bedside and in the classroom. Established in 2015 and proudly accredited by the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council (EUFAC) since 2021, this premier program offers a transformative training experience grounded in excellence and innovation.

Physicians typically pursue an AEMUS fellowship after residency as a subspecialty that has a standardized curriculum and certification exam administered by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). This fellowship focuses on advanced training and expertise in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), including clinical use, education, administration, and research.

Lead in Clinical Ultrasound

We accomplish this through rigorous training in an academic program that utilizes the resources of a nationally recognized university hospital. Fellows will be able to tap into the vast opportunities and resources available to members of the U-M Medical School faculty. As a growing section within a strong academic Department of Emergency Medicine, the Clinical Ultrasound faculty are dedicated to fellow education and mentorship and providing a top-tier fellowship experience.

The fellowship program earned initial Emergency Ultrasonography Fellowship Accreditation Council (EUFAC) accreditation in April 2021 and was reaccredited in February 2024.

PEM-POCUS

Separately, we are also delighted to offer ultrasound fellowship training opportunities for those with a background in Pediatrics/Pediatric Emergency Medicine. In conjunction with our PEM fellowship leadership, we are able to offer a combined PEM/PEM-POCUS fellowship training opportunity. Please reach out directly to our PEM-POCUS fellowship director, Dr. Nicole Klekowski, if you are interested in learning more.

Our Mission

Our goal is to train fellows to be leaders in point of care ultrasound. We aim to deliver the best ultrasound fellowship education in the country. Fellows will become excellent clinical sonographers, educators, academic leaders, and administrators in ultrasound. The fellowship will provide the skills necessary to become an effective Ultrasound Director.

How to Apply

We accept graduates from both three and four year EM residency programs.

The U-M Medical School Clinical Ultrasound Fellowship is a part of eusfellowships.com. and participates in the NRMP Emergency Medicine Match as detailed on that site. We do not accept applications outside of this process.

A decision to select an applicant for an interview will be made only after review of all required materials:

  • Three (3) letters of recommendation (including one from your current Program Director)
  • A Current CV
  • A Letter of Intent

Thank you for your interest in our program. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Interview Dates are available within September, October, and early November and will be offered on a first come basis.
