Position Summary
The Clinical Ultrasound Division Chief, in partnership with the Emergency Medicine Department Chair and other departmental leadership, will provide the overall vision, leadership, and coordination across the clinical, educational, and research missions for the Clinical Ultrasound Division. They will be responsible for developing and executing a division-level vision and strategic plan that is aligned with the mission, vision, and values of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Michigan Medicine.
Key Responsibilities
Administrative
- Develop, implement, and support the mission, vision, and values of the division.
- Create and annually update a division organizational structure, strategic plan, and budget.
- Determine criteria for Division membership and assure criteria are met by Division faculty.
- Lead regular Division faculty meetings.
- Review operational, quality, and patient safety data related to Division-specific clinical practice.
- Provide mentorship and promote the professional development of faculty within the Division.
- Meet annually with Division faculty to discuss their goals and responsibilities and provide formative feedback.
- Provide the EM Chair with feedback regarding division members’ performance and goals before the Chair’s annual faculty performance evaluations.
- Collaborate with the EM Chair and faculty search committee on faculty recruiting needs for the Division.
- Engage with EM development officer to pursue philanthropic support for the Division.
- Advance the reputation, visibility, and prominence of the Division within Michigan Medicine and at the local, regional, state, national, and international level.
- Other relevant duties as delegated by the chair
Clinical/Operations
- Collaborate with the Chair, or their designees regarding clinical and operational objectives of the division
- Collaborate with the Service Chief on faculty onboarding, US related focused professional practice evaluation and ongoing professional practice evaluation, patient safety and quality related issues.
- Collaborate with the Medical Directors and Emergency Department Directors of Operations of all clinical sites to support US site faculty with respect to the clinical operation of US in the department. This includes equipment purchasing, maintenance, policy, clinical ultrasound workflow, billing/revenue cycle, and electronic health record integration across all departmental activities.
- Represent the Emergency Medicine Department on US related issues with stakeholders outside of our department as well as outside of Michigan Medicine
Education
- Provide oversight in partnership with the Associate Chair of Education for the AEMUS fellowship director to help ensure the success of the fellowship mission, the development of US fellows as faculty, and any necessary departmental work to maintain Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council (EUFAC) accreditation.
- Oversee division faculty efforts to maintain and improve US educational efforts across all learner populations including medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, and other health care providers.
- Engage in interdepartmental educational collaborations.
Research
- Pursue appropriate independent scholarship, actively participate in and support others’ participation in US Scholarly activity.
- Create an environment of collaboration and infrastructure to ensure the success of research endeavors of the division.
- Provide oversight, in partnership with Associate Chair for Research, for the Division Research Director.
Culture
- Collaborate with the Associate Chair for Belonging, Community Engagement, and Well-Being to ensure the creation and maintenance of an equitable culture both within the division and across the Emergency Medicine Department

Job Description
The Department of Emergency Medicine at Michigan Medicine is recruiting academic dual-boarded emergency medicine/critical care faculty to join its innovative and growing Division of Critical Care. This position may include clinical time in the Michigan Medicine Emergency Critical Care Center (EC3), adult emergency department, Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU), Trauma/Burn ICU (TBICU), and UM-Health Sparrow ICUs.
Michigan Medicine’s EC3 is a pioneering 9-bed ICU housed within our emergency department that is dedicated to the initial diagnosis, stabilization, and ongoing care of critically ill patients. The CVICU is a 32-bed ICU that cares for critically ill adult cardiothoracic surgical patients by providing cardiopulmonary support including ventricular assist devices, total artificial heart systems, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Michigan Medicine is a Burn Center and Level 1 Trauma Center with a 10-bed TBICU that cares for critically ill patients with traumatic or burn injuries. UM-Health Sparrow is a Level 1 trauma and comprehensive stroke center in Lansing, MI that serves as the referral hospital for four affiliated community hospitals, one freestanding ED, and the mid-Michigan region.
Candidates should demonstrate clinical excellence and strong interest in critical care clinical operations, quality improvement, scholarship, or education. Candidates must be ABA, ABEM, ABIM, or ABS critical care medicine board-certified or board-eligible with clinical experience in the relevant ICUs. Board certification in emergency medicine is also required. The academic appointment will be commensurate with experience and credentials.

Qualifications
- ABEM EMS Board Certified/Eligible strongly preferred.
- May alternatively hold an active Fellow of Wilderness Medicine Status or be a graduate from an SAEM-approved Wilderness Medicine Fellowship or be a BC/BE PEM physician with a strong clinical background in pediatric EMS.
- If not EMS Board Certified/Eligible, they must have completed the NAEMSP Medical Directors Course and be personally approved by the EMS Division Chair and EM Department Chair.
- Must have demonstrated ongoing engagement and involvement in clinical practice of EMS Medicine.
Job Expectations
Administrative:
- Attend at least 50% of EMS Division Faculty Meetings.
- Be active in current EMS clinical work within any of the Core EMS Realms (Ground/MCA, Flight, Event, Special Operations, Disaster Preparedness, Education, Wilderness, Research, etc).
- Attend at least one EMS-related conference every two years.
Education:
- Provide at least 2 didactics experiences to EMS Learners (Fellows, Residents or Medical Students) annually.
- Complete applicable learner evaluations in a timely fashion when requested.
- Attend at least 20% of EMS CME offerings (Didactics, Journal Clubs, conferences, etc) annually.
Research:
- Participate in EMS Scholarly Activity within faculty member’s specific EMS domain while also facilitating participation in EMS Scholarly Activity for Learners within our Division.
Other:

Job Description
The University of Michigan Department of Emergency Medicine is actively recruiting highly motivated pediatric emergency medicine faculty for our division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Candidates who have completed their PEM training through pediatrics or emergency medicine residency pathways will be given equal consideration. Specifically, we are looking for qualified candidates who will be willing to work clinically and have experience and/or expertise in the following areas of strategic interest:
- Research faculty in all aspects of EMSC (emergency medical services for children) – specifically, we are especially interested PEM faculty with advanced research training (MPH, PhD) and those who either have extramural grant funding or are interested in a career in research in PEM.

The department also supports a required medical school EM rotation along with other student experiences, three ACGME accredited fellowships, and multiple non-ACGME fellowship training opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
The Program Director establishes the strategic direction of the program and is accountable for its quality and outcomes. Along with a team of assistant and associate program directors, the PD will be responsible for leading, administering and supervising all aspects of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program in accordance with ACGME, institutional, and departmental requirements. They will partner closely with other departmental leaders.
- Create the intellectual environment and coordinate the curriculum to ensure residents acquire essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become outstanding independent practitioners of emergency medicine.
- Lead a robust team of educators and administrators across a multi-site training environment ensuring smooth program operations and compliance with ACGME, institutional, and departmental policies and goals.
- To intentionally cultivate each resident’s professional identity by helping them identify, develop, and pursue a meaningful niche within emergency medicine.
- Successfully recruit outstanding House Officers to the program.
- Establish and oversee programmatic and learner evaluation in accordance with all policies.
- Engage with faculty development efforts to promote a professional, inclusive, and productive learning environment.
- Actively participate in all forms of didactic and clinical education
- Engage in and foster the academic mission through individual efforts and promoting others.
- Serve as a role model for the practice of emergency medicine through the delivery of high-quality patient care at the University Hospital Adult Emergency Department and at least one other clinical site.
Candidate Qualifications
Candidates must be Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and have a minimum of 3 years experience as Core Faculty in an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine Program. The successful candidate will have previous leadership and administrative experience such as an Assistant/Associate Program Director or Residency Program Director. Candidates must be eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan. It is an advantage for candidates to be eligible for faculty appointment at the Associate Professor or above. They should have a track record of educational innovation, scholarly publications, and participation in national organizations. In addition, they must possess the interpersonal skills to engage, inspire, and work across disciplines within a large, diverse organization. Candidates must model outstanding professionalism, high-quality patient care, and educational excellence. They should have a demonstrated ability to create a collaborative, respectful environment with a focus on developing all to their highest potential.
