In the CDHW’s third annual MLK panel discussion, social justice expert Dr. Reshawna Chapple and her guests discusses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on access to services and access to work for people with disabilities from the perspective of the Black disability community.

Many people experienced trying times during the COVID-19 pandemic, but marginalized populations have been bearing the brunt of this public health crisis. People with disabilities have experienced significant changes in how they access work, study, and care, impacting nearly every aspect of their lives.

Honoring Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy on anti-racism, equity, and inclusion, panelists discuss their lives before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting ongoing struggles and celebrating moments of resilience, intersectionality, and elevation.

Assistive Technology & Accessibility

This video addresses the importance and challenges of accessible road transportation for the quality of life of people with disabilities. Pannelists  discuss driverless and shared-use automated vehicles, what these are, and what promise they hold for addressing community mobility needs of individuals with disabilities, using examples from ongoing projects related to the accessible and inclusive design of these emerging transportation technologies.

This video give an introduction to IDEAL RRTC and goes over a research study on preventable hospitalizations (PPH) among adults with disabilities. The study examined potential risk and protective factors for PPH, comparing adults with disabilities to people without. Results indicate that adults with disabilities were at greater odds for PPH compared to people without disabilities. Use of preventative services such as annual wellness visit had substantial protective association against PPH.
