Thank you for your interest in the U-M Medical School's Department of Urology Residency program. We accept four trainees per year and a fifth 6-year surgeon-scientist track trainee every other year (starting 2021).

How to Apply
The Department of Urology only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
A complete packet consists of the following documents:
- CV
- Application
- Personal statement
- Three letters of recommendation (one of which should come from your Urology Department Chair or Section Head)
- Medical school transcript
- USMLE Step 1 score
The deadline for applications to be considered for review is October 1.
Resident Recruitment
Our team of urology faculty members screen 300+ applications each interview season. Each faculty is assigned approximately 50 applications for extensive review. Final recommendations are provided to the Program Director, Dr. Priyanka Gupta, who makes the final invitation list.
Resident selection is based on a consensus of all faculty members, with the actual ranking of applicants done at a special meeting of the entire faculty (as well as input from current Urology residents who have had a chance to meet prospective candidates).
Resident selection is based on an evaluation of:
- Academic performance in Medical School, including a Dean's Letter, grades, awards, AOA membership, class rank if available and score from Part I of the Boards
- Personal Recommendation Letters
- Personal Statement
- Interview and interpersonal skills
- Extracurricular activities and accomplishments
- Demonstrated commitment to a career in Urology through scholarly activities and participation in clinical urology activities
Interview Process
Invited applicants will undergo a one-day interview process, wherein they will meet select Urology faculty for individual and group interviews. They will also interact with all Urology residents. Each interviewer will evaluate the candidate, and a faculty meeting will be held to rank candidates in order of preference. Not all candidates will necessarily be ranked on the match list submitted by the program. Only those candidates who are the most suited for training in Urology will be ranked in order of preference. Applicants who complete a sub-internship in the department will be interviewed formally during their rotation and will not be required to return during interview season.
Applicants will also be invited to a dinner hosted by the Department to allow for additional time to become acquainted with faculty and current residents. This dinner is optional.
NEW FOR THE 2025 INTERVIEW SEASON
The University of Michigan Urology Residency Program is excited to announce that, in addition to our four positions for the traditional 5-year residency, we will be offering one position in a 6-year research track as part of this year’s match cycle.
This specialized track includes one year of protected research time following the PGY-3 year. Trainees will have access to a wide range of robust research opportunities in basic science, translational research, and health services research.
We are seeking applicants with a strong interest in pursuing a surgeon-scientist career. If you are highly motivated to incorporate dedicated research into your training, we encourage you to apply.
