Curriculum

Fellows receive advanced training in the diagnosis and management of patients with congenital heart disease, complemented by comprehensive exposure to all aspects of perioperative care.

Training takes place within our Section of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery, a nationally and internationally recognized program known for clinical excellence and leadership in the field. Based at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, the fellowship offers an immersive experience in a high-volume center performing over 750 cases annually, including one of the highest volumes of STAT 5 cases in the country.

The center delivers comprehensive congenital heart disease care, spanning high-risk neonatal operations, adult congenital heart surgery, hybrid procedures, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support. Fellows are exposed to some of the most challenging conditions in congenital heart surgery, including staged palliation for single ventricle defects, complex forms of transposition, and other STAT 4 and 5 procedures.

The fellowship emphasizes technical excellence, clinical decision-making, and a multidisciplinary team approach. A close partnership between Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery within the U-M Congenital Heart Center ensures robust collaboration through shared case conferences, quality improvement initiatives, and joint research efforts. Fellows are fully integrated into this dynamic and collegial environment, gaining invaluable experience that prepares them for leadership in the field.
