Clinical Experience & Rotations

Our comprehensive clinical program includes a variety of rotations in the early years, encompassing general surgery, critical care, cardiac imaging and other relevant surgical and non-surgical specialties. It has become the educational standard for thoracic surgical residency training. Beyond exceptional operative experiences, our residents engage in curriculum that combines hands-on simulation, multidisciplinary conferences and individualized mentorship to develop technical excellence alongside clinical judgment.

The Integrated Thoracic Surgery Residency program's seamless integration within the Michigan Medicine care system offers exposure to complex cases rarely seen elsewhere.

Academic Development Time

Additionally, residents will benefit from two years of dedicated research time (Academic Development Time), extending the program to a total of eight years. This provides them with an opportunity to engage in scientific inquiry, quality improvement initiatives, or educational scholarship, preparing them not only as skilled surgeons but also as future academic leaders in cardiothoracic surgery.
