The U-M Medical School Department of Cardiac Surgery is one of the few in the country with a dedicated Section of Basic Science & Translational Research, underscoring our commitment to advancing the science of cardiac care. Many of our faculty spend a significant portion of their time engaged in research, performing experiments and uncovering findings that advance our capabilities in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
Our research program encompasses both basic science and translational efforts, with teams investigating the underlying mechanisms of cardiovascular disease and developing new strategies for treatment. We are also actively involved in regenerative medicine, exploring how stem cells, tissue engineering, and molecular interventions can be used to repair or regenerate damaged heart tissue. Our translational efforts extend to clinical trials that engage both patients and volunteers to evaluate new surgical techniques, diagnostic tools, medical devices and preventive strategies.
Research Facilities & Collaborative Partnerships
Many of our research activities take place at the North Campus Research Complex (NCRC), a 2.1 million square-foot facility designed to foster collaboration and innovation. Within this environment, cardiac surgeons work side-by-side with scientists across various disciplines such as bioengineering, cell biology, internal medicine, pharmacology, and physiology. Our interdisciplinary partnerships support the cross-pollination of ideas that accelerates the pace of discovery and ensures our research translates meaningfully into improved patient care. Through such collaborations, we are able to tackle complex questions and push the boundaries of what's possible in cardiovascular medicine.
