Resident Research Opportunities
Residents benefit from two years of Academic Development Time (ADT) that starts between their PGY-3 and PGY-4 clinical years, allowing for focused research engagement. During the first three years of residency, trainees are introduced to the groundbreaking research being conducted within the department and are encouraged to build relationships with primary investigators.
Additionally, with a dedicated T32 training grant housed within the Department of Cardiac Surgery, residents have access to funding for in-depth research experiences that allow aspiring scientists to focus on inquiry into some of the most pressing issues in adult and pediatric cardiovascular diseases.
With an abundance of research opportunities available, the immersive environment at the University of Michigan equips residents with the skills to become thought leaders and innovators in the field of cardiothoracic surgery.
Kirsh Research Symposium
To complement their clinical training, residents are encouraged to pursue meaningful scholarly inquiry throughout the program. Residents showcase their investigative achievements at our annual Kirsh Research Symposium, where their findings are presented to faculty and peers.
Projects span the full spectrum of scientific investigation, with residents given the autonomy to design studies aligned with their individual interests and career goals. This scholarly experience fosters critical thinking skills and equips residents with the methodological expertise to pursue lifelong research endeavors that will shape the future landscape of cardiothoracic surgery.
Resident Publications
Many of our residents have produced high-caliber research that garners recognition throughout the academic thoracic surgery community, with numerous projects presented at prestigious national and international society meetings and published in leading peer-reviewed journals.
This success stems from our program's robust mentorship model, where residents receive personalized guidance from faculty experts who share complementary research interests. These collaborative partnerships, often spanning multiple disciplines and research centers within Michigan Medicine, create fertile ground for meaningful investigation and scientific contribution.
