Breast Imaging Fellowship

The U-M Medical School Department of Radiology offers a post-residency breast imaging fellowship that is designed to provide individuals an opportunity for specialized training and academic development.

Fellows will actively participate in all functions of the Breast Imaging Division and will assume significant responsibility for its daily operation under faculty supervision. Research and teaching opportunities supplement the clinical curriculum.

We are dedicated to maintaining an educational fellowship tailored to the individual. We strive to develop relationships with our fellows that endure beyond their training. Our graduates have been successful in both academic and private practice.

The fellowship consists of in-depth training in all aspects of breast imaging. Fellows spend all 12 months in Breast Imaging, with daily assignments rotating throughout the division. Schedules are tailored to each fellow’s needs but will include all of the following facets of breast imaging:

  • Screening and diagnostic mammography with tomosynthesis
  • Breast ultrasound (interpreting and performing)
  • Breast MRI
  • Contrast Enhanced Mammography
  • Proficiency in performing all image-guided breast procedures
  • Mammographic guided core needle biopsies (prone and upright)
  • Ultrasound guided core needle biopsies and aspirations
  • MRI guided core needle biopsies
  • Ultrasound guided breast steroid injections
  • Localizations (wire and magnetic seed)

Fellows take breast imaging pager call, typically 1 week per month, answering patient questions or performing urgent aspirations, infrequently as necessary.

Fellows are given the opportunity to attend at least one national meeting during their fellowship year.

Education

  • Fellows participate in weekly multidisciplinary tumor board. This allows each fellow to see numerous breast cancers, learn about their management, and interact with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Routine fellow-level lectures are given by faculty.
  • Weekly breast imaging conference rotates between radiology-pathology correlation, journal club, and interesting case conference. Fellows participate in all the conferences.
  • U-M Medical School is a participant in the national Breast Imaging Fellowship Consortium, with access to weekly, fellow-level lectures, quarterly journal clubs, and networking opportunities with other programs throughout the country.
  • Fellows are given interdisciplinary observation experiences in breast surgery, pathology, and radiation oncology.
  • Familiarity with MQSA requirements and observing an FDA inspection are included during the year.

The fellow is provided informal and formal opportunities to teach trainees and colleagues.
