Program Overview
C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is ranked the #1 children’s hospital in Michigan by U.S. News & World Report and verified as a Level 1 Children’s Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons, providing an exceptional environment for training in pediatric radiology and offering exposure to a wide range of pediatric pathology. Fellows benefit from broad, hands-on experience in both common and rare/complex pediatric conditions.
The Section of Pediatric Radiology at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital serves our patients with cutting-edge imaging technology, including two 1.5Tesla and one 3Tesla Phillips MRI scanners, a Siemens Alpha® photon-counting detector CT scanner and two GE Discovery HD CT scanners, five advanced ultrasound rooms and three portable ultrasound units, four fluoroscopic suites, up to date digital radiography, two nuclear medicine rooms and access to PET-CT on site as well as a full range of pediatric molecular imaging. There is also an intraoperative Siemens 1.5 Tesla magnet MRI as well as a state-of-the-art interventional radiology suite within the operating room floor.
The fellowship offers ample opportunities for participation in multidisciplinary conferences, performing research (with dedicated research time and mentorship), and participating in educational activities of the pediatric radiology section by working with and lecturing our rotating radiology residents and medical students. This program is ideal for candidates seeking robust clinical training in pediatric radiology within an academic environment that supports scholarship in pediatric imaging.

Curriculum
The goal of the Pediatric Radiology Fellowship at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is to provide comprehensive training in all aspects of pediatric imaging while fostering teaching and research skills necessary for a successful career in pediatric radiology.
Fellows are scheduled monthly, with work assignments among the different imaging modalities to ensure balanced exposure and experience. Throughout the year, work assignments are structured such that the required exam quotas for the accredited Pediatric Radiology Fellowship are exceeded in all areas. In addition to clinical experience, fellows are provided with regular academic days throughout the year to pursue teaching and scholarly activities. This includes opportunities to engage in clinical research, contribute to educational initiatives, and present at local and national conferences. We are committed to training future leaders in pediatric radiology who are not only clinically excellent but also active contributors to the academic community.
Upon completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be eligible to be examined by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) for the Certificate of Advanced Qualification (CAQ) in Pediatric Radiology.
Fellows spend most of the year within the Section of Pediatric Radiology at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, receiving in-depth training and experience across all major imaging modalities, including pediatric radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Under the guidance and mentorship of a dedicated and experienced faculty, fellows develop expertise in performing a wide range of procedures and interpreting the full spectrum of radiological examinations performed within the pediatric radiology section.
The fellowship also includes dedicated 3-week block rotations in pediatric neuroradiology, pediatric interventional radiology, and pediatric nuclear medicine. Given multiple pediatric subspeciality care programs at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, fellows will have ample exposure to complex pediatric cases. Our fellows will develop an advanced knowledge base in pediatric disease and their imaging manifestations, and gain expertise in imaging workup for children with a wide range of diseases and injuries, with emphasis on appropriateness, diagnostic efficacy, and radiation safety.
Educational development is a key component of the fellowship. Our fellows receive dedicated teaching conferences at least twice a month, given by pediatric radiology faculty. Fellows also participate in dedicated weekly case-based teaching morning conferences together with the rotating radiology residents and medical students, promoting a collaborative and interactive setting. In addition, fellows attend a comprehensive year-long pediatric radiology core curriculum series designed to solidify their knowledge base.
Fellows actively participate and present at multiple interdisciplinary clinical conferences throughout the year, with an increasing level of responsibility as their training progresses. This graduate involvement helps build confidence and expertise in communicating findings in collaborative clinical settings. During the final trimester of the fellowship, each fellow will deliver formal didactic lectures on pediatric radiology topics of their choice, further developing teaching skills and content mastery.
Ample research opportunities exist in the Section of Pediatric Radiology for fellow involvement. Fellows are allotted regular academic time (typically one-half day per week) to engage in scholarly activities. This includes conducting research, preparing educational materials, and participating in teaching activities.
Fellows are encouraged and fully supported in presenting their work at national meetings and contributing to academic publications. Opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration with specialists from other pediatric subspecialties or with our colleagues from the Department of Radiology further enriches the academic experience.
Salary & Benefits
The University of Michigan offers highly competitive salaries and generous benefits to our fellows and advanced trainees. Trainee salary will be commensurate with that of a House Officer at an equivalent level of training based on the HOA contract.
