Metabolic, Physiological and Behavioral Phenotyping Core

The Metabolic, Physiological and Behavioral Phenotyping Core (also referred to as the Animal Phenotyping Core) is directed by Dr. Nathan Qi. It performs a variety of in vivo physiological assessments encompassing glucose homeostasis (glucose tolerance, insulin tolerance, hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic, hypo- or hyperglycemic clamps), lipid metabolism (3H-triolein lipid tolerance, 3H-palmitate FA fluxes) energy homeostasis (indirect calorimetry by CLAMS, Promethion systems with ambient temperature or dietary challenge), ultradian hormone secretion (Culex platform for serial biological fluid sampling from free moving, unrestrained mice), behavioral measurements (learning/memory, locomotor activity, anxiety, depression, meal pattern analysis, operant conditioning).

Animal Care and Germ-Free Core

Directed by, Dr. Lucy Kennedy, the Animal Care and Germ-Free Core plays a central role in the management of animal flow through the Center’s phenotyping cores from initial acquisition to final disposition of imported mice. The gateway for all phenotyping involving live mice, the Animal Care and Germ-Free Mouse Core provides mouse importation, quarantine, housing, veterinary care, clinical chemistry and histopathology services. It also hosts a germ-free mouse facility that produces and distributes germ-free and gnotobiotic mouse models.

The applicant should first contact the Center Director or Core Director to discuss the mouse strain, determine the best set of tests to be conducted, and obtain an estimate of costs.

What happens next?

Our Center reviews the request. Acceptance is based on the Center's workload, the relevance of the available and/or requested tests to the mouse model, and the perceived value of the animal to research on diabetes, obesity, and metabolic diseases. The applicant will be contacted with the decision. Following consultation with the Center and/or Core Director(s), a written estimate for all tests agreed upon, including the number of mice required for each test and a timeline for receipt and testing of the mice at the MMPC-Live, will be sent to the applicant for his/her approval.
