The Michigan Diabetes Research Center's Clinical Research Unit (MDRC-CRU) provides support to approved research studies. The MDRC, together with the Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center (MNORC), is providing integrated services through the Diabetes and Obesity Clinical Research Core.

DEXA Scans
DEXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) is now considered by many to be a "gold standard" in body composition analysis and bone density measurement. The DEXA machine is located at the MDRC Clinical Research Unit at Domino's Farms, Lobby M.
PeaPod
Cosmed-PeaPod is located at Domino’s Farms, Lobby M. This machine is used to measure whole body densitometry to determine body composition in infants weighing between 1kg to 8kg
Clinical Support
Includes space and support by clinical personnel (height, weight, BP, pulse, other services - as determined in a service agreement).

Facilities Description
- Location: Domino’s Farms, Lobby M, Suite 3100
- Hours: 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM weekdays
Access to the suite outside of business hours is by key card (Note: access to the building may also require a key card). Andrea Waltje ([email protected]) is the authorized signer with Domino’s Farms Security (734-930-4911) to obtain a card key for long-term access to the MDRC-CRU at Domino’s Farms, Lobby M. Submit the printed and completed Access Card-Key Request form to Andrea Waltje for signature.
- Shared Intake Space
MDRC investigators may make use of the MCRU scale and stadiometer, and the patient restrooms.
- Exam Rooms and Equipment
There are 4 exam rooms 2108, 2110, 2112 and 2171. Rooms 2108, 2110, and 2171 have wall-mounted aneroid sphygmomanometers. A portable sphygmomanometer is also available. All rooms have an exam table (or gurney) with a desk, one stool on wheels, one or two chairs, one overbed table, a sink, paper towels, exam gloves, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes/spray, blue pads and white pads, exam table paper, a pillow, pillow case, and disposable examination gowns. Additional rolls of exam table paper are in the exam table drawers in rooms 2108, 2112.
- DEXA
The X-ray Bone Densitometer with enCORE v18 software is manufactured by GE Medical Systems Ultrasound & Primary Care Diagnostics, LLC. Dexa scans are scheduled by contacting MDRC-CRU staff at [email protected].
- Laboratory
Shared laboratory space is available (room 2168) and includes a dedicated MDRC-CRU refrigerated centrifuge and a small specimen refrigerator for short-term sample storage. Pick up services for samples can be arranged as needed. Overnight storage of samples can be arranged. Contact MDRC-CRU staff at [email protected] when a pick up is needed. Wet ice is available. Dry ice can be ordered as needed.
- Location: Kellogg Eye Center, Kellogg Clinical Research Center (KCRC), Rooms 537 and 539, are located on the 5th floor of the Kellogg Eye Center. The suite is accessed using elevator A.
- Hours: 5:45 AM to 6:00 PM weekdays (Kellogg Eye Center business hours).
An attendant is at the reception desk from 6:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays. KCRC staff do not provide support for MDRC-CRU studies.

- Waiting Area
MDRC-CRU participants may wait in the Kellogg Eye Center Lobby until they are escorted by study staff to the 5th floor KCRC. To avoid burdening non MDRC-CRU staff, please do not use the waiting area in the 5th floor research suite.
- Exam Room
There is 1 examination room (539) and 1 small conference room (537) available. The exam room has a portable electronic sphygmomanometer, electronic scale, and exam table. The room also has a sink for handwashing. Disposable examination gowns, disposable pillow-cases, blue pads, exam gloves, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes/spray are available in the room. Supplies are in the drawers of the exam table. There is also an ECG machine available upon request.
- Laboratory
There is a small specimen processing laboratory adjacent to the examination room. The area can be used for phlebotomy. There are two small centrifuges for spinning blood and bench space for aliquoting samples. A wall mounted sharps disposal container is available.

Waiting Area
If participants have a scheduled appointment in MEND, check-in clerks are on duty from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Study staff are permitted to use the intake bays to obtain vital signs from research participants if necessary. Any equipment used/touched should be cleaned.
Exam Room
The exam room (room 25) has a wall-mounted aneroid sphygmomanometer, an exam table (with exam table paper), a pillow, a pillow case, a desk and chairs, a sink, paper towels, and a wall-mounted sharps box. Exam gloves, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes/spray are available in the room.
Laboratory
Shared laboratory space is available (Endo Testing Suite/Treatment Control Room; room 1576) and includes a refrigerated centrifuge, a room temperature centrifuge, and a microcentrifuge. It also contains two small specimen refrigerators. The refrigerators are locked, check with clinic staff regarding short-term storage. Wet ice is available.

You may schedule research space and services at Domino’s Farms, Lobby M; Domino’s Farms, Lobby C, Room 25 (MEND); and Kellogg Eye Center, after you complete the Michigan Diabetes Research Center- Clinical Research Unit- First Contact Form.
