Supporting Team Science

The Brehm Center for Diabetes Research is a high-tech hub for type 1 research.

William "Bill" and Delores “Dee” Brehm have had a long history of commitment to U-M, providing crucial vision and support for a range of projects and programs, including Brehm Tower - which currently houses many premiere diabetes basic, clinical, and translational research scientists and laboratories. With this partnership, U-M has elevated the ability to search for the cure and prevention of type 1 diabetes and its complications.

Discovery

Furthering innovations to advance science more rapidly, such as through the Islet Program, which is uncovering important new aspects of islet biology, positioning U-M as a top center for islet research in the world.

Systems Analysis

Key to Brehm Center activities, Joyce Lee, MD, MPH, U-M Brehm Center Investigator and Professor of Pediatrics, is leading efforts to leverage health informatics with the Epic Electronic Health Record and Tableau business intelligence software to support operations, enhancing quality and safety measures, and propelling discovery forward. Dr. Lee is collaborating with human computing specialists and both machine learning and artificial intelligence experts to better understand how data can be used to solve real and pressing healthcare problems.

Brehm Scientists

The Brehm Center for Diabetes Research, in the Brehm Tower, houses a variety of scientists whose focus is to understand, improve, prevent, and cure diabetes. Brehm Investigators, Brehm Professors, and the rest of the Brehm Center Researchers share resources and collaborate in the Brehm Tower, where the open lab layout and proximity to each other allow for a unique intellectual synergy.

These multidisciplinary scientists represent the spectrum of diabetes inquiry: type 1 diabetes, diabetes management, complications of diabetes, and factors leading to type 2 diabetes — such as metabolism and obesity issues. These facets are explored in bench labs, as well as clinical studies with human patients.

Brehm Investigators

The Brehm Investigators are a group of U-M researchers (most of them housed in the Brehm Center) that represent a variety of scientific areas. They are designated as "U-M Brehm Investigators" because they bring their unique skills to address the puzzle of type 1 diabetes.

Brehm Coalition

The Brehm Coalition is a unique group of senior scientists from across the country devoted to the creation of a new paradigm in medical research based on an unprecedented level and style of laboratory collaboration. Their chosen research pathways are aimed at accelerating the search for a cure for type1 diabetes.

Brehm Facilities

The Brehm Tower allows Brehm Center Researchers to share resources and collaborate in a space that fosters a unique intellectual synergy.
