Biospecimens and Demographic, Clinical and Psychosocial Data

For Research Collaborators

The Weight Management Program maintains a collection of biospecimens housed at U-M's Central Biorepository and linked demographic, clinical, psychosocial and metabolic health data from individuals with obesity before and after weight loss. Biospecimens may include serum, plasma, urine/urine derivatives, skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. Other measures collected and warehoused in a RedCAPS database include baseline and interval results from resting and exercise V02 (Vo2Max), body composition by DXA and/or BodPod.

This resource is available to researchers seeking to study mechanisms of obesity, its associated health conditions, metabolic dysregulation/adaptation, biomarker discovery, and response to weight management interventions. Access to samples and data is subject to appropriate approvals, participant consent, data use agreements, and institutional regulatory requirements.

Mixed Meal and Oral Glucose Tolerance Tests

About the tables
  • The Mixed Meal Tolerance Test measures how much insulin and other digestive-related hormones are produced after consumption of a standardized liquid meal replacement.
  • The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test measures the body’s response to an oral glucose challenge after consumption of Glucola (a standardized sugary drink). This test is used to screen for type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes.

Metabolic Phenotyping - Subjects Participation

About the table
  • The Resting Metabolic Rate Test is a measure that estimates the number of calories your body burns at rest by analyzing your breathing gases (C02 and O2). It is performed using indirect calorimetry.
  • VO2max is a measure of physical fitness obtained by walking or running on a treadmill, while breathing through a mask connected to a tube.
  • Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) is a measurement of body fat, muscle mass and bone density using a low-dose x-ray.
  • BODPOD is a measurement of body fat and muscle fat (and estimate of the number of calories your body burns at rest) by using air displacement
