The Administration Core of the Michigan Diabetes Research Center (MDRC) provides leadership, infrastructure and resources to support and enhance diabetes research, including the translation of scientific discoveries from the bench to the bedside.

To accomplish this, the Administration Core will:

  1. Raise awareness of, interest in, and support for research on diabetes, its complications, and related endocrine and metabolic disorders, and create an environment that facilitates such research.
  2. Coordinate the activities of the MDRC and provide guidance and coordination for support for diabetes research at the UM and its regional partners.
  3. Recruit new investigators to diabetes research and the MDRC, and support new and established investigators in diabetes research.
  4. Administer Cores that provide MDRC members with expertise and services to support diabetes-related research.
  5. Administer the MDRC Pilot and Feasibility Study (P/F) Grants Programs.
  6. Provide enrichment, education and training for investigators from diverse schools, departments, and institutes to foster interdisciplinary collaborations.
  7. Maintain the Center website.

The Administration Core formulates Center goals and objectives through internal committees and interactions with external experts and organizations, including the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, American Diabetes Association, and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, among others. The Administration Core also provides financial management, personnel management, and facilities and equipment management for the Cores and programs within the MDRC. Financial management encompasses budget preparation, subcontract development, purchasing, account management, and financial reporting in accordance with the NIH and University policies and guidelines. Personnel management includes staff recruitment, hiring, salary and benefits program administration, supervision, and evaluation. Facilities and equipment management includes new space construction, space renovation, equipment procurement, maintenance, and service contracts.

The Administration Core oversees the development of new cores and services to meet the needs of its members. The Administration Core is also responsible for communication and information exchange between Center members, the UM and regional partner institutions, and the larger diabetes community. The Administration Core creates and distributes the Center Newsletter, as well as other valuable information to Center members, via email and the Center website, which the Administration Core maintains and updates. The Administration Core also oversees the Enrichment Program, which sponsors symposia and seminars, and facilitates the education of junior investigators and students. The Administration Core oversees the financial health of the Center. The Administration Core also collaborates with other Centers, departments, and units to acquire and share equipment, cosponsor P/F grants and enrichment activities, etc.
