About Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery | Hospital Dentistry

As one of the oldest programs of our kind in the country, we make a big impact across the tripartite mission of academic surgery, striving to offer the best care and the best education, and to produce the most impactful scientific advances.

We have a track record of steady growth that allows us to reach more patients and to provide a rich context of diverse cases for trainees and researchers.

Improving Care at Home & Abroad

At U-M Health, we are dedicated to improving care for underserved populations through annual medical mission trips, which also provide invaluable experience for residents and dental students.

We collaborate with surgeons and communities in China, India, Mexico, and South America to offer services in microvascular, head and neck reconstructive, cleft lip and palate and TMJ surgery. By working closely with our counterparts in other countries, we’re able to extend the skills of surgeons on the ground, improving care for the long run.

Patient Care

Backed by the comprehensive and technologically advanced resources of U-M Health, our oral and maxillofacial surgeons and hospital dentists provide the full range of clinical services, from cleft lip and palate repair to TMJ treatment to corrective jaw surgery using advanced 3D simulation for surgical precision.

Our specialties include repair of congenital anomalies; microvascular reconstruction of head and neck trauma; treatment of oral, head and neck cancers; dental implants; and multidisciplinary care for obstructive sleep apnea. We treat both children and adults.

We offer residency programs in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and general practice hospital dentistry, as well as a fellowship in oncologic and microvascular reconstructive surgery. We also offer an internship in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Research

Through our research, we’re breaking new ground in regenerative medicine, with R01-funded work in cell-based therapeutic devices and products, as well as several active clinical trials in sleep apnea, TMJ, and speech rehabilitation for oral cancer patients. Our institution also houses the Maxillofacial Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery National Database for oral cancer data.
