Program Overview
Fourth-year medical students interested in training at the U-M Medical School may apply for a 4-week plastic surgery sub-internship from June through November as part of our visiting medical students program.
The Section of Plastic Surgery also participates in the Health Equity Visiting Clerkship program sponsored by the Office for Health Equity and Inclusion at Michigan Medicine.
How to Apply
You must apply for the visiting student sub-internship through VSLO.
The 2026 University of Michigan AAMC VSLO catalog will be viewable starting on February 2, 2026. The U-M Medical School screens applications and then sends them on to the Section of Plastic Surgery for review and selection. Students are selected on a competitive basis, and rotations are only offered through VSLO. The Section of Plastic Surgery will not start reviewing applications until mid-March and start offering spots towards the end of March and early April.
Curriculum
Rotations
Visiting sub-interns join two of our five primary teams (Adult RED, Adult BLUE, Adult SILVER, HAND, or Pediatric/Craniofacial GOLD), spending 2 weeks with each team. This schedule gives you the chance to dig in to a particular service for a couple of weeks, while still getting a diverse experience. You’ll join our care teams at the University Hospital. If you have a particular interest in joining a specific service, we will do our best to accommodate your requests.
RED: Breast reconstruction, microsurgery, general reconstruction, body contouring
BLUE: Breast reconstruction, microsurgery, gender affirmation, lymphedema
SILVER: Gender affirmation, facial aesthetics, peripheral nerve, general reconstruction, body contouring
HAND: Adult and pediatric hand
GOLD: Craniofacial, pediatric, vascular anomalies, facial feminization, facial aesthetics
Schedule
You’ll spend 3 to 4 days per week in the OR and 1 to 2 days per week in clinic, providing an opportunity for some continuity of care along with direct interaction with faculty. Sub-interns also participate in educational conferences throughout the week.
Evaluation
You’ll receive an individual mid-rotation feedback session and an end-of-rotation feedback session with our faculty coordinator. We can provide a completed sub-internship evaluation form to your home school registrar once your rotation ends. You will also have the opportunity to meet with section leadership during your rotation.
On-Call
During the 4-week sub-internship, you’ll be on call for one Friday/Sunday weekend shift and one Saturday weekend shift. For the Friday/Sunday shift, you will be on call starting at 6 PM on Friday evening, round on Saturday and be excused for the rest of the day before returning for a 12-hour shift (6 AM - 6 PM) on Sunday. The Saturday shift is a 24-hour shift from 6 AM Saturday to 6 AM Sunday. We have a night float resident who is on call Sunday-Thursdays. Sub-interns do not take call during the week.
You’ll also have two full weekends off during your sub-internship, giving you time to explore Ann Arbor — and maybe catch a football game!
Accommodations
It is very helpful to have a car to get around town, unless you’re staying within walking distance of the University Hospital. However, it is not necessary and most visiting students are able to use ride sharing options for traveling to some of our offsite locations. Ann Arbor also has a bike-sharing program and several ride-sharing options.
