Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society

The Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society is a fellowship of surgeons whose training has been influenced by the legacy and principles of Dr. Coller, a pioneer in the history of academic surgery.

The Coller Society was established in 1947 by Dr. Coller's loving and grateful former residents to honor him and further the principles which he embodied. Our members are dedicated to promoting the art and science of surgery, supporting education and perpetuating friendships.

About Dr. Coller

Dr. Coller arrived at U-M Medical School in 1920 as an assistant professor after training at Harvard, serving in WWI, and working in private practice. He was the Chair of the Department of Surgery at U-M Medical School from 1930 - 1957, when he relocated to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital to continue teaching until his death in 1964.

Not only did he advance patient care and basic science research, but he also completely restructured the format of the American surgical residency.

Excellence Through Fellowship

The Coller Society regularly hosts Clinical Meetings, in which members and residents gather and have the opportunity to connect as well as discuss recent scholarly research.

The members have established the Frederick A. Coller Professorship, as well as the Moses Gunn Research Professorship, and the Society continues to support the formation of new academic appointments at the U-M Medical School.

From its inception, the Society has offered the Coller Traveling Fellowship (est. 1949) for trainees to visit other institutions for exposure to alternative surgical perspectives. The Society also awards several Coller Research Fellowships (est. 1993) in support of resident and young faculty research.

The intent and spirit of the Coller Traveling Fellowship is to provide resources to defray the costs (partially or entirely) of a clinical experience whereby (through the assistance and connections of your Coller Society member sponsor) you travel to another center and gain clinical experience through, for example, observing multidisciplinary clinics or procedures or interacting with leaders in your field.

Stipend is reimbursement of travel expenses up to $3,000.

Clinical Meetings

The Coller Society sponsors Clinical Meetings, in which members and residents present scholarly research in a relaxed atmosphere, and, with our families, enjoy the renewal of old and the creation of new friendships.

At each Clinical Meeting, outstanding investigative work is recognized through several awards, including:

  • Jobst Award (est. 1972)
  • Milton Bryant-Margaret Arnold Award (est. 1998)
  • Resident Research Award (est. 1985)

In addition, prominent surgeons deliver the Richard E. Fry Memorial Lecture (est. 2000) to honor Dr. Dick Fry, a highly respected former member.
