The U-M Medical School Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program welcomes applicants who’ve completed dental school and who seek an integrated clinical and academic program covering the breadth and depth of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

In this program, trainees spend about 2 years in medical school and 4 years rotating on surgical services, with a minimum of 30 months of oral and maxillofacial training.

Ultimately, our goal is to provide the training and support to produce oral and maxillofacial surgeons who go on to become the next experts in the field. Graduates meet the requirements leading to certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

What to expect?
  • Well-rounded and well-respected training: Residents study and train with a skilled cohort of colleagues and faculty at the top-ranked U-M Medical School, Michigan Medicine and U-M School of Dentistry. Graduates complete an MD, a two-year certificate in general surgery for medical licensure and a specialty certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
  • Unique case-mix and case volume: As part of a national and international destination care center, you’ll see conditions you won’t get the chance to treat elsewhere. Our busy practice in core areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery as well as multidisciplinary programs in craniofacial anomalies, sleep disorders, and oral / head and neck cancer treat patients of all ages and gives our learners a robust and broad scope of clinical experience.

Our recognized experts specialize in all facets of the specialty, providing diverse and broad exposure to residents. We are strongly committed to educating the next generation of oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
