VA Serious Mental Illness Treatment & Research Training Program
The U-M Medical School Department of Psychiatry VA Advanced Psychiatry Fellowship and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Mental Illness Research and Treatment is a prestigious national fellowship, offered in partnership with the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry.
Fellows are based within the Serious Mental Illness Treatment Resource and Evaluation Center (SMITREC) and the Mental Health Services, Translation and Outcomes team (MHSOT).

Program Highlights
- Training Model: Primary training occurs through supervised clinical service delivery with patients, paired with substantial research skill development.
- Goals: Fellows gain mentored experience in clinical skill-building, treatment evaluation, research design and implementation, scholarly publication and grant writing.
Eligibility & Application
- Psychology Postdocs: Applicants must be graduates of APA-accredited doctoral programs in clinical or counseling psychology, have completed an APA-accredited internship, and be U.S. citizens.
- Physicians: Post-residency applicants must have ACGME-accredited residency training, be board eligible/certified, and hold an unrestricted U.S. license. International medical graduates need a valid visa and an unrestricted ECFMG certificate.
Postdoctoral fellows receive supervised clinical training sufficient for professional license eligibility.
