Program Highlights

Join us for exemplary training, interdisciplinary collaboration, and comprehensive support for your professional and personal growth and begin your psychiatry career at one of the nation’s premier residency programs.

  • Personalized Training: We recognize each resident’s unique strengths and goals, offering flexible pathways to tailor your educational experience. The curriculum ensures mastery of core psychiatric skills while encouraging the pursuit of individual interests through a wide range of electives, a robust Research Track, and a comprehensive Clinical Scholars Track. We are dedicated to supporting work-life balance with part-time training options, generous parental leave, subsidized childcare, and family-friendly policies.
  • Faculty Mentorship and Support: Residents learn directly from nationally recognized researchers, clinicians, and educators who are committed to patient care, teaching, and mentorship. Intensive supervision and monthly advisory meetings promote both professional and personal growth. Additional support includes dedicated psychotherapy supervision and the opportunity for individualized mentoring relationships within a collaborative and supportive community.
  • Exceptional Clinical Experience: Our residents participate in rotations at premier clinical sites such as our ambulatory clinics, Women’s Health and Psycho-oncology, Anxiety Disorders Clinic, and Geropsychiatry. Training spans all major areas of psychiatry—community and emergency, PTSD, addiction, ECT, child and adolescent, and personality disorders—using innovative therapeutic models and evidence-based approaches.
  • Excellence in Research: We are a national leader in psychiatric research and are frequently recognized for outstanding NIH funding. Residents have the opportunity to engage in groundbreaking research through several research programs in the Department of Psychiatry, the Michigan Neuroscience Institute, the Eisenberg Family Depression Center, and the VA Medical Center Ann Arbor, fostering an environment rich with academic inquiry and discovery.

Coming to U-M has been a fantastic experience. There are many great role models among the faculty, staff, and fellow residents.

Here, you can learn and grow as a psychiatrist with a variety of clinical opportunities, but also a chance to explore teaching, research, and other projects. And I still have time to listen to podcasts, hang out with my co-residents, and enjoy the beautiful city of Ann Arbor.
