Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Research Training

At U-M Medical School Department of Internal Medicine, research training is one of the defining strengths of our Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship.

Fellows benefit from up to 18 months of protected research time throughout the training program.

Trainees also have access to guidance from dozens of accomplished mentors, whose expertise spans the translational spectrum from molecular science to clinical research to population health.

Message from the Associate Program Director for Research

Robert Dickson

Our program has an unrivaled record of preparing physician-scientists for successful careers. Over the past decade, 17 of our graduates have been awarded NIH career development grants (K23 and K08) and have gone on to publish in top-tier journals such as NEJM, JAMA and Nature Medicine.

We pride ourselves on tailoring each fellow’s training to their individual career goals, drawing on the resources of our highly successful T32 program and the unparalleled breadth of the U-M Medical School, one of the world’s elite research institutions.

We are proud of this legacy and excited to welcome the next generation of research leaders.

- Robert Dickson, MD, Associate Fellowship Director of Research

Research Opportunities

Early in the first year of fellowship training, we introduce our fellows to the wide range of research and scholarly opportunities available within our program. Fellows are encouraged to explore many areas of investigation—including cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, clinical physiology, clinical trials, epidemiology, health services and outcomes research, medical education, and more—as they discover those that best align with their passions and career goals.

For those whose research interests extend beyond the scope of the Pulmonary Division, we fully support and encourage collaboration throughout the University of Michigan’s extensive academic network. Our fellows benefit from opportunities to partner with faculty across the institution, fostering a truly multidisciplinary research experience.
